King of Pop to Rest Among Quiet, History

Michael Jackson’s life played out on a world stage, headlines screaming his every move, frenzy following his footsteps. His death, memorial and investigation amplified the delirium and prolonged the anguish of family and fans. On Thursday, he is scheduled to be interred at Forest Lawn Glendale in what will be a hidden monument in a mausoleum made of marble and mortar..”

There will be only silence. No marquees, no spotlights, no paparazzi.

He will be enveloped by the grandeur of the grounds, the majesty of the buildings and the significance of history.

In the Great Mausoleum, he will join Hollywood legends of yesterday like Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, W.C. Fields and Red Skelton, as well as “The Last Supper Window,” a lifesize stained glass recreation of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, and Moses, a reproduction of Michelangelo’s sculpture for the tomb of Pope Julius II in Rome.

On a hilltop nearby, in a building the size of a sports arena, hang two of the world’s largest paintings, “The Crucifixion” and “Resurrection.”

Batesville Casket is Coy About Starring Role in Jackson Funeral

An Indiana company was center stage at pop superstar Michael Jackson’s funeral this week with a product no one could miss: a gleaming golden casket, shined to a mirror finish. Batesville Casket, the world’s largest maker of caskets, provided the luxurious Promethean model, which traditionally comes with a deep-blue velvet interior. Like Jackson, the casket is extravagant and showy. And it was front and center at Jackson’s service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, which millions watched live on television. But like a low-key funeral provider that prefers to remain behind the scenes, the company modestly confirmed the news without actually doing so.

“We never discuss any particular business transaction, but based on the images we saw on television, it appears to be a Promethean,” said Teresa Gyulafia, a Batesville spokeswoman.

Michael Jackson’s final flamboyance will be the vehicle in which he’s delivered to his final resting place: This 14 karat goldplated custom casket that will be the center of attention at Tuesday’s memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The $25,000 container from Batesville Casket Company (“because every family deserves a Batesville”) is made of solid bronze, plated with 14-karat gold, and polished to a mirror finish. It’s the same model in which James Brown was buried. No question about it, it’ll be the fanciest coffin in the graveyard. Jackson saw the casket first hand when he paid tribute to the singer as he lay in state in New York City’s Apollo Theatre, where he started his career, in 2006
